born in jamshedpur, bihar, namrata did her primary schooling in jamshedpur at the sacred heart convent school. she left the steel city when she was 9 years old and went to study at welham girls school, dehra dun. from there she went on to do a b.com. degree from h.r.college of commerce & economics, mumbai and a course in interior designing from the sophia polytechnic, mumbai.
hailing from a family of aficionados, aesthetics and an understanding of art and its nuances came to her naturally. her passion and knowledge of indian contemporary art was recognised by family and friends and they encouraged her to start a gallery.
armed with oodles of enthusiasm, passion, idealism and no formal training, namrata established her gallery, gallery art resource trust at nariman point in july 1996. gart, as it was popularly known, was founded on the premise of promoting young talent, which was an uphill task as art appreciation in india was still at a nascent stage and there were only a few discerning buyers. she did several shows with gart in india and abroad featuring the works of predominantly young talent giving their deserving work the much needed platform. the intent was to create a band of post-moderns who would eventually hold their own in the diaspora of art both in india and abroad.
thus these shows were meticulously curated by namrata keeping in mind the visual vocabulary of the artist, the medium that they worked in, and the display was thus chronologically juxtaposed and defined. creating an interesting dialogue amongst the works and the audience and a logical flow between the works to make them self explanatory.
in addition to this she worked with senior artists like mr yusuf arakkal, thota vaikuntham, laxman goud, r.b. bhaskaran, s.g. vasudev, sudarshan shetty, bose krishnamachari, baiju parthan, vivek vilasini, ravi kashi and many more.
we are glad to have namrata onboard with us!
